Different forging methods entail distinct processes; among them, the process for hot die forging is the most extensive.

The general sequence is as follows: billet cutting; billet heating; preparatory roll forging; die forging; trimming; punching; straightening; intermediate inspection (to verify the dimensions and check for surface defects of the forging); heat treatment (to relieve forging stresses and improve machinability); cleaning (primarily to remove surface scale); final straightening; and final inspection. Typically, forgings undergo visual and hardness inspections, while critical forgings are additionally subjected to chemical composition analysis, mechanical property testing, residual stress analysis, and non-destructive testing.
